🇯🇵 Japan: visa and tax day limits
Ready-made rules count your days against the limits the law names. They don't decide your visa or residency status, and many laws add conditions a day count can't see.

What the rules say
Short-term stays
Japan admits short-term visitors for tourism and business under a temporary visitor status. Many nationalities are covered by visa exemption arrangements; others must obtain a visa in advance. The permitted length is set on entry.

Longer stays
Working, studying, or living in Japan requires an appropriate status of residence, usually arranged before travelling. In recent years Japan has also added a short-term route aimed at remote workers.

Tax residency
Japan does not use a simple day count for tax residency. It looks at whether you have your domicile (the centre of your life) in Japan, or have lived there continuously for a year or more. For people who are not Japanese nationals, a separate "non-permanent resident" category can apply while they have lived in Japan for five years or less within the past ten. Your tracked days can help document your time there.
