🇲🇽 Mexico: visa and tax day limits

Ready-made rules count your days against the limits the law names. They don't decide your visa or residency status, and many laws add conditions a day count can't see.

Ready-Made Rules

What the rules say

Visitor stays

Mexico admits most visitors, including those coming for tourism, business meetings or transit, as visitors without permission to work, for up to 180 days. Some nationalities need a visa in advance. The officer at entry decides how many days to grant, which can be fewer than 180, so check the date on your entry stamp or digital migration form (FMM).

Longer stays

Temporary and permanent residency routes exist and are generally applied for at a Mexican consulate before travelling.

Tax residency

Mexican tax residency is based mainly on having a home in Mexico. If you also have a home elsewhere, it turns on whether your centre of vital interests, such as most of your income or your main professional activity, is in Mexico. There is no simple day-count test, so a day total alone does not show whether someone is resident.
